Ahmad Mohammad Ali, who worked as a driver for the Alawite pro-Assad leader Ali Eid, was arrested on October 26 for allegedly trying to assist a major suspect in the Aug. 23 twin bombing attacks outside two Tripoli mosques to flee Lebanon.
After being apprehended by the army’s intelligence, Ahmad admitted having helped Ahmad Merhi flee Lebanon at Ali Eid’s behest, according to information obtained by MTV. During interrogation with Ahmad, it turned out that the Alawite leader had provided a hideout for Merhi in the Akkar borderline town of Heker al-Daher before being smuggled into Syria.
Ahmad was later handed over to the Government Commissioner to the Military Court, Judge Sakr Sakr, who in his turn referred him to the Internal Security Forces Information Branch for further interrogation.
According to information obtained by MTV, investigations have now been focused on finding out whether Ahmad had also assisted the other three suspects to flee Lebanon and probing his potential involvement in Tripoli’s twin attacks.
