Fletcher meets Lebanese PM, says cabinet formation proves local rivals' ability to reach agreement for their country's sake

Prime Minister Tammam Salam met Monday with the British Ambassador to Lebanon, Tom Fletcher, with talks featuring high on latest developments as well as bilateral ties.

"I conveyed to Prime Minister Salam the personal greeting of UK PM David Cameron on the formation of the new Lebanese government," the envoy told reporters following the meeting.

He added that there were still too many challenges pending, including the necessity to brush aside the specter of the Syrian war, and meeting the needs of the Syrian refugees and the Lebanese communities hosting them.

"They are all major challenges. But agreeing on a government constitutes a strong indication that the political forces are struggling to face division and extremism," he said.

"This government was formed in Lebanon, which proves that the Lebanese leaderships are capable of reaching an agreement for the sake of the nation's best interest," he underlined.

"There is no time to waste. We must all work together to reach what the Lebanese wish for: stability, independence, and a bright future," he said, adding that Britain will be the strongest ally in supporting efforts to preserve Lebanon's stability and build a better future.
