Aoun says presidential election will 'definitely' take place, labels consensual presidential as 'weak'

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun confirmed that the presidential election will "definitely" take place as scheduled, slamming a “consensual president” for being a "weak" head of state.

In a televised interview on Wednesday, Aoun described a strong president as one who derives his strength from himself, enjoys popular support and represents his community.

Aoun deplored the "major deficiency" plaguing the president's prerogatives, criticizing the fact that all powers have been transferred to the prime minister who is the one that should be consensual.

Tackling the so-called 'army-people-resistance' triad, Aoun said that when "the army can no longer defend the country, anyone must practice his right to defense", pointing out that the United Nations grants such a right if ones land is occupied or facing a permanent threat.

"I'm not concerned with the competition that is taking place in the drafting of the Cabinet's policy statement,” Aoun said.

Commenting on Hezbollah's involvement in Syria, Aoun said the Shiite party "or any other one might have a viewpoint on how to confront the threat, but we must agree on identifying this threat."

“There is an incubator for terrorism in Lebanon and we must first address the sources of terrorism,” he said.

“We must brush aside the disputes, move forward and cooperate and there is a domestic will in this regard,” Aoun stressed.

The FPM leader slammed Israel's latest airstrike on the Lebanese-Syrian border, saying it aimed at stirring discord among the components of society and create negative repercussions.

“It aims at worsening the situation and the Syrian opposition would benefit from it on the ground,” he added.

Aoun called on local rivals to preserve the state institutions, saying "we must have our own decision and no one can defeat us if we unite our will. We must forget our differences from now until the presidential vote."

“We agree with al-Mustaqbal Movement on dialogue and overcoming the crisis in order to create an opportunity to reach national consensus among all the country's components,” Aoun said, noting that his recent meeting former premier Saad Hariri contributed to the formation formation of the cabinet.

“My meeting with Mustaqbal does not negate the other meetings," he added.
