Following media reports claiming that Mahmoud Hayek, a Hezbollah member indicted in the attempted assassination of Telecom Minister Boutros Harb, was killed in Syria, security sources divulged that it had received unconfirmed information affirming the suspect's death.
State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Sakr Sakr had issued an arrest warrant in absentia against the Hezbollah official, who hails from the southern village of Adchit, for attempting to assassinate Harb. The indictment was then based on data collected by the Internal Security Forces, using camera footage showing the suspect at the crime scene.
In an interview with MTV, Minister Boutros Harb denied he had received official information confirming Hayek’s death.
The March 14 figurehead had been the target of a failed assassination attempt on July 5, 2012 as three suspicious individuals were seen dismantling the elevator door in the building were Harb’s office was located. Detonators were found planted inside the elevator, however, suspects were able to flee.
