Naim Aoun, a figurehead in Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) and the nephew of MP Michel Aoun, who is also known for his rare media appearances, published an article in Asafir newspaper Tuesday.
Two days before the article was published, a wedding of an FPM activist was about to turn into battlefield when a dispute erupted between a member of the Change and Reform parliamentary bloc and an FPM coordinator, after the latter had refused to shake hands with the lawmaker. The act prompted the deputy's bodyguards to physically assault the official, causing chaos witnessed by guests who were attending the wedding ceremony.
Before tackling the article, it is worth noting that several deputies, leaders and activists in FPM seem to be unsatisfied by the performance of the movement but most, not to say all of them, are neutralizing Gen. Michel Aoun.
Friends of Naim Aoun quoted him as saying in his private visits or even during FPM meetings that "the movement was a leading political party, in its ideas and performance; it was considered as a role model for other parties and a symbol for youths."
"This movement, which others and I have always known, does no longer exist," Aoun added.
"It is true that challenges and threats are numerous but traditional approaches adopted lately made us reach unsatisfactory results," he stressed
"Officials such as ministers, deputies and partisans must be now aware. In the pastm FPM was successful because its beliefs and acts were homogeneous and in harmony, which rendered the party dynamic and politically vivid," he pointed out.
"We must find creative solutions before it is too late because ambiguous and dull rhetoric does no longer convince anyone," Aoun reiterated.
Aoun's words will not pass unnoticed given his key post and significant role within FPM, as well as his high-ranked family membership.
His article highlighted a sample of discrepancies that have been ravaging the movement; disputes have been also plaguing FPM-affiliated media and distorting ties between deputies, therefore leading to the decrease of party activities that are now limited to diner banquets in several regions, where same old speeches are being delivered.
Some of FPM loyalists will read these lines and discard them, while others will admit the truth and start "the change and the reform" process inside out. It is up to their will and conscience...
