The Islamic State aka IS are reportedly irked by the French government for using the term “Daesh” in reference to their militants.
Usually referred to as ISIS or ISI, the terrorist organization believes the new term to be degrading, the Associated Press reports.
The Washington Post noted in a report that “Daesh” is an acronym of their Arabic name “Al-Dawla al-Islamiyya fi al-Iraq wal Sham”.
Similar to the word “Daes” - meaning trample or crush-, is reportedly the source of IS’s dislike of the new term.
The Independent says the group hates it so much that they have threatened to cut out the tongues of those who use it in public.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius stated that he doesn’t recommend the use of the Islamic State when referring to the terrorist group, noting that its use blurs the lines between Islam, Muslims and Islamists.
“The Arabs call it ‘Daesh,’ and I will be calling them the ‘Daesh cutthroats,” he said.
