Men, Get your Pregrancy Test!

18-year-old teenager Byron Geldard, from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, was diagnosed with testicular cancer after taking a pregnancy test.

"There I was with a positive pregnancy test and something growing inside of me. I thought I was going to end up in a documentary," he said "it was all very surreal to be honest."

Byron was referred to the Teenage Cancer Trust unit in Cambridge after scans revealed that he had a tumor that had spread to his lungs. The center asked him to provide a sample for a pregnancy test to check his hormones.

After getting a positive result, Byron was diagnosed with stage four testicular cancer which had spread to his abdomen and lungs.

The U.K. teen said medical professionals used a pregnancy test to check his hormones. After being diagnosed and undergoing treatment he says he is now cancer free. Many commenters on the story have jumped to the conclusion that all men should go out and buy a pregnancy test to screen themselves.

It sounds like an urban legend, but there is some truth to it: We’re talking about detecting something called HCG.

Pregnancy tests detect beta-hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which turns out to be the same hormone that is elevated in some men who have testicular cancer.

“A majority of the men who have early testicular cancer do not have high enough values of HCG that can be measured by a home urine pregnancy test,” said Dr. Gupta.
