The Press office of former Prime Minister Najib Miqati issued the following statement in response to Future party's latest remarks on the leaked tapes, depicting security forces maltreatement of inmates inside Roumieh prison's favcilities.
“Since the emergence of abuse videos of Roumieh prison’s inmates last Sunday, Future party’s media kicked off a systematic campaign to distort the truth and focus liability on the corrective attempts of Miqati's government, not taking into consideration that the perpetrated physical abuse was deliberate and premeditated. The audacity of some media platforms reached the point of calling it "the Legacy of Miqati’s government of Islamist inmates.”
In light of said allegations, the statement read:
"The Future party is one of the key manifestations of political exploitation. Not only did it continue to fabricate accusations, falsehoods and slander but it went overboard as to overturn all slogans it once raised when it entered the ruling circle, forgetting that people’s memory retain all past events.
Secondly, the Justice Minster was the first to point out the presence of said torture videos on Sunday morning, followed by Miqati’s reply that questioned their credibility given the atrocious practices exercised on inmates who are supposed to be shielded by their human rights, despite the severity of the charges they’re suspected or convicted of. Miqati then called for a transparent probe into these violations so as to unearth the truth.
Third of all, Future officials were seemingly distrurbed by Miqati’s second statement in which he urged relevant officials to shoulder their moral and national responsibilities over an incident that occurred two months ago but only confessed after the video’s release.
But can statements, released merely in the hopes of defusing tension and justifying unlawful actions, shore up their responsibilities?
The Islamist detainees issue is not the byproduct of Miqati's government. In fact, it erupted after the future party's accession to power, alongside Dannieh’s events in year 2000 and naher al-Bared’s in 2007.
Miqati’s government worked tirelessly, against concocted campaigns and challenges at the time, in order to build the courthouse at Roumieh’s prison so as to facilitate and speed up trials of detainees. So why hasn’t it been utilized to today?
At last, these misleading political and media campaigns adopted by the Future party can no longer cover their shortcomings. We have remained silent so as not to intensify people’s anxieties as well as the country’s harsh reality; however, Future officials mistook it for weakness.
In this context, we can only say that “the sun is bright and people can see clearly.”
