Campaign to Get Overturned Van in Ditch Recognized as World Heritage Site

Residents in Cornwall have been campaigning for an overturned car near Penzance to win recognition as a World Heritage Site.

More than 2000 people have liked the Facebook page Get World Heritage status for the upside down car at Ludgvan Leaze.

The page asks: "Please help raise awareness of the upside down car at Ludgvan Leaze, one of the oldest and best loved monuments in Penwith."

Last week an update on the page gave an idea behind the organisers vision for the site:

"We need to raise £1million to protect this popular local landmark before it grows into the hedge. Our vision is to make it a celebrated tourist attraction, with gift shop, tea room, muddy car park and overpriced fudge with a blurry picture of the car on the label."

The Facebook page, set up by local bus driver Jimmers Thomas, saw a huge increase in visitor numbers over the last couple of days after reports appeared on local news sites Pirate FM and Western Morning News.

Jimmers told the Telegraph: "I started the page just as an in-joke for friends and locals who've passed the car there for the last few weeks. I was wondering why it'd had been left there so long, then realised I couldn't remember a time it WASN'T there."

"We've got a few world heritage sites around here with all the old tin mines, so I thought somebody might know which forms to fill in to get UNESCO to recognise the car's cultural significance. I made a couple of silly pictures, and was overwhelmed with the response."

In the wake of media attention, the car was finally moved earlier today - but Jimmers has not been deterred from his efforts, saying: "If I can raise the million pounds, I'll put it towards the restoration, and get the car back in its rightful upside-down position soon so the whole community can enjoy it again."
