A number of Lebanese youths staged a sit-in in front of the Canadian embassy in Jal-El-Dib to demand the reopening of immigration opportunities to Canada.
A representative of the Canadian embassy met with the protesters and asked them to submit an official letter to the embassy that included their request.
"Canada respects freedom of expression," she told the group of protesters, thanking the organizers and security forces for maintaining a peaceful protest.
"The embassy does not accept direct applications for immigration, but those interested can access its website to see all the information on immigration to Canada, in addition to information that protects people from fraud," she explained.
The embassy's representative also affirmed to those who had been subjected to fraud that "the Embassy had never asked anyone to deposit money into an account or transfer money through private money transfer companies."
