In the spirit of encouraging local tourism, and in celebration of International Museum Day, the Minister of Culture in Lebanon, Mohammad Wissam El Mortada, announced free access to the National Museum and all other museums from 10:00 am till 2:00 pm from Thursday till Sunday. This is an admirable initiative to encourage the Lebanese to get exposed to some culture and history, and leave their signature on the Lebanese flag in the National Museum to commemorate their visit.
Reconnecting with our roots and seeing how powerful man is and just how capable he is of accomplishing so much, are enough to entice the imagination, trigger the senses, please and delight, and hopefully nudge the Lebanese into taking action to move things along in their own life. This last one might be a tall order. However, learning new information about your country will definitely add value and knowledge to your repertoire while enjoying this leisurely activity.
This is a great opportunity to go off on an adventure to places we haven't yet discovered or maybe we haven't seen or heard of in a long time. Lebanon has been a home to numerous civilizations leaving behind historical riches, and has endured wars leading to diverse Lebanese identities which have inspired countless pieces of art.
Museums are valuable learning arenas. Cultural heritages are preserved, communities are celebrated, and the arts are honored. Moreover, Museums are a neutral space where diversity and sustainability are encouraged by being open to the public regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion.
Take your pick from the National Museum of Beirut, Sursock Museum, MIM Mineral Museum, Robert Mouawad Private Museum, Sidon Soap Museum, Archaeological Museum of the American University of Beirut, Gibran Museum, Modern and Contemporary Art Museum (MACAM), Bsous Silk Museum, Beiteddine Palace, and the list goes on.
Head on over to the museums this weekend and I can promise some fun, a much-needed diversion and an escape from reality. Who knows, you might pick up a thing or two of interest as well from all the historical treasures at your fingertips. The arts and history give us hope and renewed faith that we shall rise again like the Phoenix, as we've done many times before.
