Today’s event will be a marking turn in the relationship between the Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese Forces. The LF headquarters in Maarab will host a ceremony during which membership cards will be handed out to partisans.
The guest list to the event set to feature an address by LF Chief Samir Geagea will include party officials as well as several political figures that are usually in attendance, especially those affiliated to March 14 and the Future movement.
However, to everyone’s surprise, the list will also include a man who was never part of any Lebanese Forces’ ceremony or celebration: FPM Chief Michel Aoun.
This invitation cannot be taken lightly. It is definitely a turning point that once again confirms that communication between these two rivals has come a long way.
“There’s no turning back,” said sources close to both leaders, affirming that both factions have refrained from engaging in any behavior that could upset or embarrass the other.
This indicates their keenness on turning the page on the past and bettering their ties.
Aoun will not attend the event in person, but will instead send a representative, who for all the right reasons, would be welcomed by Geagea in what would be an enormously significant salute.
At a time when the focus had been set on the documents being passed between the two parties in an effort to reach an agreement that sets up for a new era of ties, it seems that a new phase is already being established, leading FPM and LF to a place “where no other dare go”.
