WSJ: Trump Favors Diplomacy Over New War With Iran

7/1/2026 12:46:13 PM

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. President Donald Trump believes launching a new large-scale military campaign against Tehran could undermine efforts to dismantle Iran's nuclear program, opting instead to keep the focus on diplomacy.

Citing U.S. officials, the newspaper said Trump is currently satisfied with authorizing limited strikes against Iran in response to violations of the memorandum of understanding, rather than escalating into a broader conflict.

According to the report, the president has reviewed military options for a full-scale war with Iran but has chosen to remain committed to the diplomatic track, viewing it as the best chance to secure a lasting agreement over Tehran's nuclear activities.

The officials added that Trump is also willing to allow negotiations with Iran to continue beyond the August 18 deadline if doing so increases the likelihood of reaching a comprehensive nuclear deal.
