COVID-19 cases on the rise

8/20/2026 2:13:46 PM

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that COVID-19 infections are rising or are expected to rise across all 50 states.

The agency noted that COVID-19-related emergency department visits remain very low. However, wastewater data provide a more sensitive indicator of community transmission, detecting signs of infection even among people who show no symptoms.

Wastewater data show moderate viral activity in Hawaii and Mississippi, while states including Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Nevada, Texas and Washington are reporting low levels. The remaining states are classified as having very low activity.

An updated COVID-19 vaccine targeting the predominant XFG variant is expected to become available in the fall, as efforts continue to combat the virus and reduce the impact of recurring waves.
