Jersey cows helping Zambian families boost incomes

Jersey cows are helping farming families in Zambia earn more money and put food on the table, according to Jersey officials preparing to visit the country.
Farmers, government officials and dairy experts will discuss how the breed is helping improve milk production at the African Jersey Forum from 13 to 16 September.
The Jersey cow, which originated in the Channel Islands, is known for producing high-quality milk while needing less feed than many larger breeds and is well suited to hot climates, said Jersey Overseas Aid.
Through projects funded by the charity, farmers in Zambia have been given access to Jersey cattle, training and support to help grow their businesses.
Deputy Carolyn Labey, who is leading the Jersey team, said the island's dairy industry was "transforming opportunities for smallholder farmers in less privileged parts of the world by improving household incomes, food security for their families and economic development for rural communities".
She added: "This international event shines a spotlight on the Jersey cow and provides an important platform to showcase Jersey's leadership and contribution to the global dairy sector."
The visit comes as Jersey and Zambia prepare to renew a dairy partnership agreement first signed in 2022, extending work aimed at strengthening the country's dairy industry.
During the three-day conference, delegates will also visit projects in Zambia to see how Jersey-backed schemes are helping farmers produce more milk, earn more from their animals and support their local communities.
