President of the Republic Joseph Aoun, marking the 44th anniversary of the assassination of President-elect Bachir Gemayel, said that his message remains present in Lebanon’s national journey.
"On September 14 every year, Lebanon marks one of the major milestones in its national memory, recalling the image of President-elect Bachir Gemayel, who was killed in an act of treachery before assuming his constitutional duties. He became a martyr for the homeland, his name forever engraved in the Lebanese consciousness as a symbol of faith in Lebanon as a country of pluralism, sovereignty and freedom," Aoun said.
He added: "Through his positions and struggle, President Bashir Gemayel embodied a firm belief in Lebanon as one entity, its land and its people. He expressed this belief through his enduring slogan, ‘Lebanon, 10,452 square kilometers,’ encapsulating an inclusive national vision affirming that Lebanon, with its entire geography and territory, is the final homeland of all its citizens, indivisible and undiminished, with no place for segregation, partition or exclusion."
"Today, as we commemorate the anniversary of his martyrdom, we reaffirm that his message remains present in our national journey, and that upholding the unity of the land, people and institutions is the best tribute to the blood of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Lebanon," he said.
"As we commemorate this occasion, we renew our commitment to completing the building of a strong and just state, the state that alone guarantees the independence of its decision-making, full sovereignty over all its territory, and the dignity of its citizens, in a manner worthy of the sacrifices of the martyred president and his comrades," Aoun said.
"Glory and immortality to Lebanon’s martyrs, and may Lebanon always enjoy pride and dignity," he concluded.
