Former Lebanese Forces Media and Communications chief Charbel Jabbour said Lebanon has become “one of Iran’s arenas,” questioning what he described as the Arab and Lebanese leniency toward Tehran.
“I do not understand this Arab and Lebanese leniency toward Iran,” Jabbour told MTV, asking why no Arab country has decided to cut ties with Iran despite what he described as its continued attacks.
Jabbour said that if the Lebanese state fails to bring Hezbollah’s weapons under its control, it should not wait for U.S. President Donald Trump or Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to act. Instead, he said, the state should take measures to pressure Hezbollah, particularly through economic measures.
He also said Sunnis and Druze had set an “exceptional example” by standing alongside Christians in southern Lebanon against what he called “saboteurs,” adding that Israel does not want to displace residents of southern Lebanon.
“Peace with Israel is necessary, and it is in the interests of both Lebanon and Israel for the Lebanese state to remain in place,” he said.
Jabbour further said Prime Minister Nawaf Salam should make it clear to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that normal relations with Lebanon require the removal of weapons from the country, adding that, if the state had “national dignity,” it should seal the Iranian Embassy shut.
