Raggi: Iran Has Yet to Accept That the Lebanese Government Now Holds the Decision

Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi said the Iranians have yet to understand that decision-making authority now rests solely with the Lebanese government. In remarks to the press, he stressed that Lebanon is negotiating directly on its own behalf and does not need anyone to negotiate on its behalf.
Regarding the negotiations, the foreign minister said that both Israel and Hezbollah are not cooperating in facilitating the process, but considered Hezbollah’s responsibility to be greater because of its refusal to discuss restricting weapons to the state.
He added that the framework agreement came as a result of the two “wars of support” launched by Hezbollah in the south, stressing that the Lebanese state’s efforts to extend its authority over its entire territory will not lead to civil war.
Raggi also revealed that during his scheduled meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday, he will propose the formation of an international force to replace the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
He explained that the Lebanese state’s efforts had failed to secure an extension of the UN force’s mandate.
