General Security Chief Escapes Suicide Attack in Bekaa

Just as the Lebanese had finally voiced relief over the sudden serenity overshadowing their country, terrorists have managed to retrace their steps back into Lebanon.

As Lebanon continues to plunge in presidential void, the state's institutions find themselves surrounded by imminent challenges entailed by ongoing regional unrest.

A suicide car bombing targeted an ISF checkpoint in Bekaa's Dahr al-Baydar at al-Namlieh Bridge, killing ISF Chief Warrant Officer Mahmoud Jamaledddine, and injuring 34 others.

Sources told al-Hayat pan-Arab daily that the blast erupted moments after the convoy of General Security Chief Abbas Ibrahim had passed through the targeted zone.

"The explosion went off moments after the convoy I was in passed through the checkpoint," Ibrahim told MTV.

Later on, it was revealed that an ID belonging to 30-year-old Tareq Loutfi al-Jebbaoui who hails from Aarsal town, was found inside the car bomb, state-run news agency reported.

The Interior Ministry had declared that six security personnel were wounded in the explosion.

State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr, who inspected the bombsite, said the four-wheel drive vehicle was loaded with at least 25 kilograms of explosives.

Following the attack, security forces cut off several roads in Beirut, including the airport road and those leading to Speaker Nabih Berri's residence in Ain al-Tineh, Hamra, Verdun, the Kuwaiti Embassy, UNESCO as well as the military hospital.

Road has been also blocked outside the Army's barrack in Sioufi.
