A Western security source told The Daily Star that Sheikh Ahmad Assir had temporarily sought refuge at the offices of Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya in Sidon.
The source said that after the Army refused an offer made by a delegation of Tripoli preachers to mediate a cease-fire, members of the delegation went to Bilal bin Rabah Mosque, where Assir was taking refuge, and urged him to flee.
The source added that Assir, his family and Fadl Shaker were taken to the offices of Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya in Sidon in Sheikh Salem Rafei's car. Rafei headed the delegation of preachers. The source said he had no information about Assir's current whereabouts.
