An Egyptian court on Wednesday ordered the conditional release of former president Hosni Mubarak in one remaining case against him, judicial sources told AFP.

Mubarak was detained over charges of ordering the killing of protesters during the 2011 unrest. The former president was sentenced to life in prison last year for failing to prevent the killing of protesters.

His sentence was overturned on appeal and he is now being retried, along with his security chief and six top police commanders. He is facing a number of other corruption charges.

However, Mubarak can't be held anymore because of a two-year limit pending a final verdict for the case, which began in August 2011.

His lawyers argue that he should be let go after Wednesday's hearing into charges of having received gifts from the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper — the last case that has kept him in detention.

"All we have left is a simple administrative procedure that should take no more than 48 hours," Mubarak's lawyer, Fareed El-Deeb, told Reuters on Monday. "He should be freed by the end of the week."

For his part, interim Egyptian President Adly Mansour decided to place the former head of state under house arrest to "preserve security and peace" in the country.
