Seven people were killed, and fifteen others wounded as shells fired from war-torn Syria rained down on the Lebanese border town of Arsal on Friday.
The deaths came as at least 20 rockets and shells launched from Syria hit border areas in the eastern Lebanon Bekaa Valley, which has seen frequent violence related to the Syrian conflict.
According to the National News Agency, five children whose ages range from 2 to 11 years old were among the victims whose lives were claimed by the rocket barrage. Another victim has been also identified as Hassan Ezzeddine.
"At least four people, including a six-year-old, were killed and 20 others were injured when shells launched from across the border hit Arsal," AFP quoted a security source as saying.
"Other areas have also been shelled, including Ras Baalbek, Al-Qaa, Al-Ain and the edges of Hermel."
President Michel Sleiman deemed it a priority to protect Lebanese regions and inhabitants against any assault, demanding the army and military officials to take the necessary measures in that respect.
The president warned against the repercussions that local parties’ involvement in the Syrian crisis entails, deploring the fact that “the Lebanese people are paying a hefty price for it.”
