Aoun Says Won't Step into Presidential Race until It Becomes Serious

Head of the Change and Reform parliamentary bloc MP Michel Aoun said Monday he will was still mulling whether to run for presidency, noting that he will not put forth his candidacy unless the battle becomes serious.

In a news conference held at his Rabieh residence, Aoun regretted the Parliament's failure to elect a new president saying that keeping the country's top post vacant makes legitimacy of any power flawed and partial.

"We have sought to avert presidential void and have exerted utmost efforts as we sincerely aimed to elect a president," he stressed.

The Free Patriotic Movement leader warned against undermining the National Pact (power-sharing pact) as long as a new president is not yet elected, affirming that his party will meanwhile deal with both the Cabinet and the Parliament based on two principles: serving the country's higher interest and ensuring the re-establishment of an authority.

"Void is exceptional to us. The country cannot go on without electing a new head of state," he said.

Aoun renewed call for a strong president who is above all supported by his own community.

"We want to fight this battle with candidates who represent the people. We cannot elect a president who is rejected by the majority of his community," he pointed out.

Lebanon is not an isolated island as we realize that it belongs to a larger global community. It's unacceptable, however, for us to interfere in any country's affairs and for foreign powers to meddle in ours," Aoun added.

He also revealed that the option of extending former President Michel Sleiman's term was being mulled with all local factions, as he hinted at potential plans to bring such a proposal to effect.

" We hope that the security threats which Sleiman had warned of are not part of a pre-planned plot aiming to impose his term's extension," he said.

Aoun defended the 'unbreakable' power trinity that he had proposed, affirming that it doesn't distort equal power sharing, but rather reinforces national unity.

"If I become a president, I will head to Paris and bring (Head of al-Mustaqbal Movement Saad) Hariri back to Lebanon," he said when asked about his ties the former PM.
