Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri warned against being dragged into sedition amid the tit-for-tat abductions, urging the Lebanese "to be calm, patient and wise."
In a statement issued Tuesday, Hariri slammed the "dark political, moral and humanitarian" developments that took place recently, saying they do not mirror the principles of coexistence.
Hariri stressed the need to rally around the state so as to resolve the case of abducted troops in Arsal, deeming this as the only solution to relief their families.
"This is the time to embrace the Lebanese Army and security forces instead of establishing private armies," Hariri stated.
"Both Sunnis and Shiites have the decision to ward off strife and prevent the spillover of the developments in Iraq and Syria," Hariri concluded.
