The Arab-West alliance to fight the Islamic State seems to bring about smiles and relief and particularly alleviate Lebanese Forces head Samir Geagea’s anxiety. Trumpeting his support to the alliance and his astonishment at Hezbollah’s fresh warning against IS threats, wondering whether Hezbollah is being countered for not including Iran.
“There is no adequate atmosphere for the Islamic State to proliferate in Lebanon,” the LF head said, “I am against individuals bearing arms since I do not perceive any imminent danger. As long as the state remains, we are to bolster its presence and strength. Self-security and individual arms paralyze and belittle the state in the swiftest way. Should the state fall; each one to his own.”
According to Geagea, Christians will not bear arms unless the state collapses, pointing out that the best way to defend Christians is through electing a President as opposed to smashing the state, paralyzing the parliament and providing Christians with a few rifles to defend themselves.
Geagea then went over March 14’s efforts to get elections going through announcing its candidate and platform, not to mention its readiness to seek a consensual candidate, which has been faced with March 8’s obstinacy that refuses to mull any other candidate.
“No presidential elections will be held any time soon,” the LF head said.
He then voiced his adherence to holding parliamentary polls since they are the best available option so far, as “numerous objective circumstances that impose extension could be corroborated.” However, swapping extension for attending legislative sessions remains out of the question, adding: “Our stance is constitutional, for it is possible for the parliament to convene to legislate and fail to elect a President.”
