British Ambassador to Lebanon Tom Fletcher voiced disappointment at the lawmakers' failure to elect a new president, stressing that said vote does not require other countries' interference.
In an interview published in Assafir newspaper on Friday, Fletcher called on Lebanese lawmakers to take part in the presidential voting sessions, affirming that the election of a new head of state would contribute to solving many problems.
The envoy warned against the "disastrous consequences" entailed by the absence of a president, deeming the extension of the Parliament's term as one of these repercussions.
“It is about time for the Lebanese people to hold their officials accountable. Lawmakers assume their posts only through elections," the envoy said. "The presidential vacuum grants a free gift to any side that does not want stability in Lebanon."
Fletcher opined that setting out a new constitution would enclose many challenges that Lebanon should currently avoid.
"Lebanon is a tiny country and can't be divided,” Fletcher said when asked to comment on proposals suggesting the establishment of a federal system.
Fletcher expressed concern over dangers facing Lebanon amid the erosion of the state authority, deeming the situation at the border as the most challenging issue.
