President Michel Aoun on Thursday expressed Lebanon's keenness on strengthening cooperation with the United Nations organizations "to achieve the goals it believes in."

In an audience with U.N. resident coordinator for operational activities for development, U.N. Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Philippe Lazzarini, the President made clear that there were several programs prepared by United Nations organizations in cooperation with the Lebanese government.

"These programs will be completed within the forthcoming stage, especially after the formation of the new government," Aoun said.

Moreover, the President called on the United Nations to play its role away from the influence of major powers. He also wished Lazzarini success in his new mission, noting the efforts made by international organizations in Lebanon.

Aoun did not fail to commend UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's decision to reorganize the United Nations development system and strengthen the organization's capacity in support of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

In turn, Lazzarini briefed the president on the aim of the proposed development reforms, "which will give additional credibility to the work of international organizations within the framework of the 2030 Development Agenda."

"The United Nations will continue to support Lebanon in all areas," Lazzarini confirmed, adding that he hoped to continue cooperation with the Lebanese government, especially in joint programs prepared in accordance with the priorities set by the government.

"The overall objective of the reform process is to make the United Nations a strong partner with greater effectiveness to support countries in achieving sustainable development goals," the UN diplomat said.

"The reform process was launched by the United Nations General Assembly in accordance with resolution A/RES/72/279 of May 31, 2018, which is similar to Secretary General Antonio Guterres's vision and proposals for re-positioning the UN development system to be launched according to the 2030 agenda," Lazzarini explained.
