Industry Minister Wael Abou Faour on Tuesday sounded the alarm on the Litani River's pollution, describing the predicament as a "national disaster."
"Treating the Litani River issue is a crucial matter," the minister said in a press conference.
"This issue is tantamount to a national disaster," he added.
"We can neither confirm nor deny if Litani's pollution is behind the emerging diseases and cancers in the region; but the amount of damage is colossal," he stressed.
Abou Four announced the ministry would close factories that did not respect the standards and conditions until they adjust their situation.
He said this decision came after the many unanswered warnings the ministry had sent to uncomplying institutions.
