Official spokesperson of the Palestinian Presidency Nabil Abu Rudeineh stated that the State of Palestine has reached an agreement with Lebanon to begin handing over weapons held inside Palestinian camps to the Lebanese Army as a "deposit" under its custody.
Abu Rudeineh added that the competent Palestinian authorities delivered the first batch of weapons from Burj al-Barajneh and Al-Bass camps on Thursday, with the handover process set to continue in the remaining camps gradually.
He explained that this follows the presidential statement issued by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on May 21, after their official talks in Beirut. During the session, President Abbas affirmed the deep fraternal ties between the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples, the enhancement of cooperation and coordination between the two countries.
Abu Rudeineh noted that both sides confirmed their commitment to the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes from which they were displaced, in accordance with UN Resolution 194, and rejected all plans for settlement or forced displacement.
He further stated that the two sides agreed to form a joint Lebanese–Palestinian committee to monitor the situation in the Palestinian camps in Lebanon and work to improve the living and humanitarian conditions of the refugees, while respecting Lebanese sovereignty and complying with Lebanese laws.
Abu Rudeineh highlighted that both sides affirmed their commitment to providing Palestinian refugees in Lebanon with their human, social, and economic rights, ensuring them a dignified life without affecting their right of return or their national identity.
Both sides also stressed adherence to the principle of exclusive control of weapons by the Lebanese state across its territory, ending any violations, and the importance of respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial unity.
The spokesperson concluded that both presidents emphasized the importance of ensuring security and safety for the people in the camps, achieving a stable security situation through full coordination between the competent authorities in Lebanon and Palestine.
