The Ministry of Public Works and Transport announced in a statement that it had fully supported the apostolic visit of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to Lebanon through a comprehensive logistical and field plan implemented from the moment the visit’s program was announced. The plan covered all key routes in the capital and the regions to ensure a dignified welcome and safe, smooth movement befitting the scale and spiritual and national significance of the event.
The Ministry strengthened its field presence in the days preceding and during the visit, deploying maintenance teams along highways and main roads from north to south, through Metn and mountainous areas up to the Syrian border. The teams ensured obstacle-free routes for official convoys and responded immediately to any incident affecting the vital road network, guaranteeing the highest safety standards and uninterrupted movement toward event locations.
In Beirut, the Ministry implemented measures to secure major traffic axes, deploying equipment where needed, especially around Saifi and Karantina, to help address water accumulation and maintain smooth access to the waterfront, in coordination with the relevant authorities to uphold public safety.
At Rafic Hariri International Airport, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation oversaw precise management of the Pope’s arrival and departure flights through close coordination with ITA Airways, Airport Security, the Republican Guard, the Lebanese Air Force, air navigation teams, and airport operations units. This was preceded by joint technical meetings between Lebanese and Italian teams to unify procedures, streamline the movement of the papal delegation, and ensure strict discipline and quality throughout preparations.
The Ministry, through the Port of Beirut, also prepared the site of the Grain Silos Martyrs Memorial; one of the visit’s key stops. The work included clearing, cleaning, and leveling the area, organizing the setting, raising flags, and coordinating with security agencies to clear routes, conduct required inspections, and facilitate visitor flow in a manner befitting the occasion.
For public transport, the Railway and Public Transport Authority placed fifty buses at the disposal of citizens throughout the days of the Mass and celebrations, ensuring organized movement for tens of thousands of participants and supporting traffic flow toward gathering points.
This state of readiness complemented the extensive works completed by the Ministry in the weeks leading up to the visit along the main routes associated with the event. These works included rehabilitating, paving, and marking the roads leading to Saint Charbel Monastery and the hermitage path in Annaya, improving the routes from Jounieh to Bkerki and Harissa up to the Basilica of Our Lady of Lebanon and Beit Anya, as well as full rehabilitation of the road to Deir Al-Salib Hospital in Jal el-Dib.
