A massive fire broke out unexpectedly on Saturday evening, August 9, in a famous restaurant and several shops in the institution area of Shubra El Kheima, directly near the Shubra El Kheima subway station.
The fire, which caused panic among residents and passersby, resulted in 4 injuries, including a woman who suffered burns, and 3 cases of suffocation due to inhaling thick smoke. The injured were transported to Nasser General Hospital for necessary medical care.
In an urgent response, the civil protection forces received a report of the fire, prompting several firefighting vehicles to immediately move, supported by fire control units, which continued their diligent efforts to control the flames and prevent their spread to nearby buildings.
The firefighting teams succeeded in extinguishing the flames inside a koshary shop, while efforts continue to extinguish the remnants of the fire in some nearby kiosks and shops.
In a serious development, the Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operation announced the suspension of train movement at Shubra El Kheima station in both directions due to the thick smoke rising from the fire site, which caused zero visibility for train drivers.
To ensure passenger safety, Shubra El Kheima station was completely evacuated, while the company confirmed that train movements continue normally from Al-Munib station to the Agriculture College station.
The company clarified that train operations at Shubra El Kheima station will resume as soon as full control over the fire is achieved and the operational environment inside the station is confirmed to be safe.
Investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, amid calls to intensify safety measures in commercial areas near vital transport stations.
