As the conflict in Gaza continues, U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Egypt to participate in negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange under Washington’s proposed Gaza plan.
According to Israeli media, Kushner and Witkoff landed early Wednesday in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh to take part in talks between Hamas and Israel. Channel 12 reported that “President Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh to join the negotiations on a deal for the release of captives and an end to the war in Gaza.”
Neither Washington nor Cairo has officially confirmed their arrival. Axios reported that Trump met with his top national security team on Tuesday to review the progress of the Gaza negotiations before the envoys departed for Egypt. According to the outlet, the two left for Sharm El-Sheikh on Tuesday and arrived the following morning.
Citing senior U.S. officials, Axios said there was cautious optimism about the possibility of a deal this week, adding that the envoys were not expected to leave Egypt without an agreement addressing the release of hostages and a ceasefire.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani is also expected to join the negotiations in Sharm El-Sheikh.
Talks between Hamas and Israel entered their second day on Tuesday, focusing on a ceasefire and prisoner exchange as part of Trump’s proposed Gaza framework.
The plan, announced on September 29, includes a 20-point proposal calling for the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, an immediate ceasefire, and the reconstruction of Gaza — which Hamas has reportedly accepted in principle.
According to health authorities in Gaza, nearly 67,200 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023 amid Israeli airstrikes and ground operations. Large parts of the enclave, including residential areas, hospitals, and schools, have been severely damaged, leading to widespread displacement and a humanitarian crisis.
Humanitarian organizations have described the situation in Gaza as dire, calling for urgent measures to protect civilians and ensure access to essential aid.
