The 11th Marine Aircraft Group of the U.S. Marine Corps announced that the military aircraft that crashed in the state of Washington was identified as an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet belonging to the Marine Corps.
NBC reported, citing a statement from the group, that the crash occurred at midday involving one of the F/A-18 Hornet aircraft stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California.
The statement added that the fighter jet was on a training flight when it crashed in the mountains of Washington State, causing a forest fire. The pilot ejected and suffered minor injuries and was later rescued by the county sheriff’s office.
The unit responsible for the aircraft said the investigation could take months and declined to provide further details.
Earlier, local TV channel “KOMO News” reported that a military aircraft had crashed near Lake Rimrock, followed by a fire.
