Iceland Becomes Fifth Country to Boycott Eurovision

Iceland has joined Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and the Netherlands in saying it will boycott the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest. All five countries have withdrawn after Israel's participation in the competition was officially confirmed last week.Stefan Eiriksson, director-general of Icelandic national broadcaster RÚV, said: "There is no peace or joy connected to this contest as things stand now. On that basis, first and foremost, we are stepping back while the situation is as it is."RÚV said Israel's participation had "created disunity among both members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the general public".The broadcaster's board agreed the decision at a meeting on Wednesday, hours before the deadline for countries to confirm whether they will join what's supposed to be a celebratory 70th anniversary edition of the song contest next May.Iceland was believed to be the last remaining country to announce its decision.Eurovision director Martin Green said: "We respect the decision of all broadcasters who have chosen not to participate in next year's Eurovision Song Contest and hope to welcome them back soon."Israel's presence at Eurovision has been an increasing source of tension, because of the war in Gaza and concerns about the voting and campaigning processes, including accusations that Israel's government tried to influence the public vote at this year's event.A new raft of measures designed to protect the integrity of the vote was approved at an EBU summit last week, after which most countries confirmed they would travel to Vienna for the 2026 contest. The Icelandic broadcaster's board had previously approved a recommendation to ask the EBU to ban Israel from Eurovision 2026.Iceland was reportedly among seven countries that then requsted a vote at the EBU general meeting on Israel's participation. That request was denied, and Israel's future participation was instead effectively tied to a ballot on the new voting and campaigning rules. The Icelandic broadcaster said that while the new measures addressed many of its concerns, it "believes that there are still doubts whether the agreed adjustments would be fully satisfactory"."RÚV has repeadly raised concerns that various Icelandic stakeholders, such as artist associations and the general public, were opposed to participation in the contest."Furthermore, RÚV had requested the EBU to exclude [Israeli public broadcaster] KAN from the contest in accordance to precedents."It is a complex matter which has already damaged the contest's reputation and EBU, emphasizing the necessity of a solution for all concerned parties."According to a transcript of Thursday's meeting supplied by KAN, the broadcaster's chief executive Golan Yochpaz criticised those trying to get Israel thrown out."The attempt to remove KAN from the contest can only be understood as a cultural boycott," he said. "A boycott may begin today with Israel, but no one knows where it will end or who else it may harm."Is this what we truly want this contest to be remembered for on its 70th anniversary?"Israel has taken part in Eurovision since 1973 because KAN, its public broadcaster, is a member of the EBU, which organises the competition.Israel has won four times, most recently in 2018, and came second in the 2025 contest.Iceland has never won but came second in 1999 and 2009.Poland 'giving Eurovision a chance'Meanwhile, Poland confirmed on Wednesday that it will take part in next year's contest."We are aware of the scale of tensions surrounding the upcoming edition. We understand the emotions and concerns," broadcaster TVP said."However, we believe that Eurovision still has a chance to once again become a space filled with music - and only music."We are giving it that chance, just as the vast majority of EBU members are."

Irish town to drop ex-prince Andrew from street name

A Northern Irish council has voted to rename a street in the town of Carrickfergus called after Britain's disgraced former prince Andrew. Mid and East Antrim is the first UK council to drop the ex-prince from a street name following King Charles III's decision to remove his brother -- now known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor -- from public life.Earlier this month the King formally stripped his younger brother's titles over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein."Andrew Mountbatten no longer represents the values of Carrickfergus," Aaron Skinner, a local councillor who backed the move, told AFP on Tuesday. The council voted unanimously on Monday to rename a main road in the town, 10 miles (16 kilometres) northeast of Belfast, called Prince Andrew Way."With the actions the Palace has taken to remove some of the titles we felt that now was the time to do this," said Skinner."If it's good enough for the King to do that then it's good enough for us."Local residents mostly agreed with the move, with some wondering why it took so long."The street should have been renamed as soon as the Virginia Giuffre book was published," said Lesley Rockett, a 41-year-old careworker. "I've just read it and it's really damning in my opinion.""It reflects on the local community, so should be changed," said 68-year-old William Foster, a retired power station worker. One of the nameplates still bearing the ex-prince's name was daubed with black paint several months ago, according to residents.Skinner said the council was considering naming the street after other royals, including Princess Catherine and Queen Elizabeth II, with a public consultation and fresh council vote expected in coming months. Several town councils in England have said they are considering such a move, though none have voted on it yet.

South Korea's 'TV dad' Lee Soon-jae dies at 91

Lee Soon-jae, one of South Korea's most beloved actors, died on Tuesday at the age of 91, his agency announced. In a career spanning more than 70 years across films, television and the stage, Lee was fondly known as the "national TV dad" for his many roles as a wise, older man. This included two of his best-known performances - as a strict father in the 1991 soap What on Earth is Love, and a silly but lovable grandpa in the popular sitcom High Kick! which aired from 2006 to 2012.News of his death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from young celebrities, including K-pop singers, speaking of his warmth and kindness, to President Lee Jae Myung."From theatre to film and television, he brought us laughter, emotion, comfort and courage," the president wrote on Facebook.Lee was acting until last year, when he won the grand prize at the KBS Drama Awards for his lead role in the comedy series, Dog Knows Everything. He was the oldest South Korean actor to ever win the honour."You become old when you sit down and expect to be waited on," he told fellow senior actors on the travel show Grandpas over Flowers. The 2013 show, which revolves around senior stars making strenuous journeys abroad, became a cultural phenomenon.Born in 1934 in Hoeryeong, a county now in North Korea, Lee was just four years old when his family moved south to Seoul. He was working in his grandparents' shop in the capital's Namdaemun market when Korea was liberated from Japanese rule in 1945.Lee studied philosophy at the prestigious Seoul National University but ventured into theatre and, eventually, TV and films. He said he was inspired to act after watching Sir Laurence Olivier play the title role in Hamlet.Lee appeared in some 140 TV shows through his career and continued to act on stage until October 2024, when he withdrew halfway through the run of the play Waiting for Godot because of an illness. He reappeared in public at the awards in December. He also had a brief foray into politics. In 1992, he was elected as a member of parliament for the conservative Democratic Liberal Party, but at the end of his four-year-term he did not run again.Lee's prolific career meant he has remained a household name for a decades, just as familiar to younger audiences and at a time when Korean entertainment is one of the country's biggest exports. His celebrity has even spilled onto the internet where scenes of him from High Kick! have resurfaced as memes on TikTok in recent years.Actor Yoo Yeon-seok, who studied under Lee, said he "exemplified acting" and Lee Soon-jae's High Kick! co-star Jeong Bo-seok described Lee not just as a mentor in the industry, but a "true mentor in my life".He wrote on Instagram: "Teacher, thank you so much for everything. I learned and felt so much from you - not only about acting, but also about life and the attitude of an actor."
