Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said that “the situation is dangerous and all solutions remain out of reach. The framework agreement is off the table, and if Israel wants to occupy Lebanon, it can do so.”
Speaking to reporters, Berri was asked about his satisfaction with the government’s performance. He replied: “We’ll see about accountability.” Asked whether the government would be held accountable in Parliament, Berri said: “There will be accountability.”
Commenting on the government’s policy of imposing fees and taxes on citizens, Berri said: “The state needs money, but it shouldn’t take money from those who need money.”
Regarding the role of the Lebanese Army at a time when Israel is escalating and expanding the scope of its attacks, Berri stressed that “the Army is the cornerstone, indeed the essential bridge for building Lebanon.”
On his relationship with President Joseph Aoun, Berri said it “remains intact, even if we disagree,” adding: “We disagree on several issues, but that does not prevent us from remaining friends.”
Berri also said he was not optimistic, adding: “The biggest proof of my lack of optimism is what is happening in terms of killings and the deaths of martyrs, including children, as well as the demolition and destruction. The moves they are making are worthless. Unfortunately, there are no solutions.”
