The World’s 10 Most Indebted Countries: Where Does Lebanon Rank?
The International Monetary Fund has repeatedly warned that global debt is approaching its highest levels since World War II, leaving governments with limited room to respond to economic shocks.

According to the IMF’s 2026 data, Sudan topped the list of the world’s most indebted countries relative to GDP, with a debt-to-GDP ratio of 334.4%, far exceeding those of Japan and Singapore.

Venezuela and Lebanon were excluded from the ranking because the IMF’s 2026 data do not include updated, reliable figures for their debt-to-GDP ratios.

Earlier this month, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that total global public debt is approaching record levels not seen since World War II and will soon exceed 100% of the global economy.
