MTV Website Sources: Lebanon and Syria Consider Two Options for Prisoners
Syrian authorities have sent Lebanon files concerning 150 prisoners transferred from Lebanese prisons to Syria under an agreement signed between the two countries on February 6, 2026, MTV website sources have learned.

According to the sources, the Syrian side has asked the Lebanese judiciary to clarify the legal status of each prisoner and determine whether they are eligible for release under Lebanon’s general amnesty law. The prisoners are serving out their sentences in Syrian prisons in accordance with the rulings issued against them by Lebanese courts.

The Lebanese judiciary is now examining the appropriate mechanism to follow, with two options under consideration.

The first would see Syria apply the general amnesty to the prisoners in line with the understanding reached between the Lebanese judiciary and the Constitutional Council. This option would require a review of the bilateral agreement to determine whether it allows the amnesty to be implemented in this manner.

The second option would involve the Lebanese judiciary reviewing each prisoner’s file and forwarding it to the Syrian authorities, which would then implement the relevant rulings and release those eligible for amnesty or reduce their sentences accordingly.
