Watch: Retaliatory attacks following the killing of El Mencho
Hours after the death of Mexican drug gang leader of the “Jalisco New Generation” cartel, Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho,” at the hands of the army, armed supporters blocked highways in several states and set fire to cars and businesses.

In some cities, tourists and residents were advised to stay indoors, while truck drivers were instructed to use safe routes or return to their workplaces until the violence subsided.

Several airlines, including Air Canada, United Airlines, and Aeroméxico, canceled flights to Puerto Vallarta, a coastal resort where tourists captured footage of smoke rising from the fires.

The wave of violence across more than six states formed a familiar scene for Mexicans, who have spent two decades watching successive governments wage war on drug cartels, resulting in the destruction of large areas of the country.

A member of Oseguera’s cartel told Reuters that the fires and sporadic gunfire were in retaliation for the killing of the gang leader by the government and threatened more bloodshed.

The source, who requested anonymity, said: “The attacks were carried out in revenge for the leader’s death, initially against the government due to public anger, but later internal killings will occur by groups seeking to expand their influence.”
