A volatile weather pattern is dominating Lebanon and the eastern Mediterranean basin until Monday morning, as the region is affected by a high-intensity low-pressure system originating from Eastern Europe.
It is accompanied by very cold air masses that will lead to a significant and sharp drop in temperatures, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and snow reaching 1,200 meters. The system will persist until next Wednesday, then gradually recede, leaving behind a wave of ice on inland and mountainous roads.
Warning: Avoid mountain roads due to snow accumulation and beware of flood formation on Monday and Tuesday.
Note: Average January temperatures are:
Beirut: between 12°C and 19°C
Tripoli: between 9°C and 17°C
Zahle: between 3°C and 13°C
Expected Weather in Lebanon:
Sunday
Partly cloudy to sometimes cloudy with a slight rise in temperatures and fog over higher elevations. Clouds will thicken at times, creating conditions for scattered showers, especially in the north, with active winds reaching 55 km/h.
Monday
Cloudy with decreasing temperatures. Scattered rainfall will intensify at times starting from noon, causing floods on the roads, accompanied by thunderstorms and active winds that may strengthen to 90 km/h, and up to 110 km/h in northern areas, causing sea waves to rise to about 4 meters. Hail is possible. Warnings are issued against flying billboards and the formation of floods. Snow is expected starting at 1,600 meters, dropping to 1,200 meters at dawn on Tuesday or even lower in northern areas, with dense fog on mountain roads leading to near-zero visibility.
Tuesday
Cloudy with an additional drop in temperatures. Dense fog will form on the mountains. Scattered rainfall will continue, heavy at times, accompanied by thunderstorms and active winds reaching 70 km/h, causing sea waves to rise to 3 meters. Snow will fall at 1,200 meters and below in northern and inland regions. Rain intensity decreases Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Dense fog persists, causing complete loss of visibility on mountain roads.
Wednesday
Cloudy in the morning with rainfall at dawn in northern areas and snow at 1,100 meters. Rain will recede in the morning, and the weather will turn partly cloudy while temperatures remain low. Caution is advised due to ice formation at high elevations.
Additional Weather Details:
- Surface winds: Southwesterly, 10–35 km/h, strengthening in the afternoon up to 55 km/h
- Visibility: Moderate on the coast, deteriorating at higher elevations
- Relative humidity on the coast: 50%–80%
- Sea condition: Rough to very rough
- Sea surface temperature: 20°C
- Air pressure: 1019 hPa (equivalent to 764 mmHg)
- Sunrise: 06:43
- Sunset: 16:49
