Justice Minister Adel Nassar received Jean Arnault, Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL), on a protocol visit marking the assumption of his new duties in Lebanon.
Arnault said he had taken up his duties nearly a month ago and was following efforts to support Lebanon’s recovery, stability and the extension of state authority across its territory, particularly in the justice sector.
He congratulated Nassar on the adoption of the law abolishing the death penalty, describing it as "a measure that many countries dream of," and stressed the UN’s role in supporting Lebanon during the current "delicate and sensitive" phase.
Separately, Nassar received UNDP Resident Representative Blerta Aliko on a farewell visit ahead of the end of her mission in Lebanon.
Aliko reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting the justice sector and rule of law, while praising ongoing legal reforms and efforts to advance the principles enshrined in the law on judicial independence.
