British Minister of State for the Middle East Stephen Doughty has welcomed Lebanon’s historic vote to abolish the death penalty, describing the move as an important step toward strengthening democratic values and fundamental freedoms.

In a statement posted on X, Doughty, who serves as the UK Minister of State responsible for the Middle East and North Africa, said the decision represented a significant reform.

"Lebanon’s historic vote to abolish the death penalty is a welcome step forward," Doughty said. "It underscores the country’s commitment to strengthening democratic values and fundamental freedoms."

The British minister also expressed the UK government’s readiness to continue engaging with Lebanese authorities as the country pursues further reforms.

"I look forward to working with the Government of Lebanon as they continue vital reform efforts," he added.
