U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott commented on a Reuters report about Iran sending money to Hezbollah.
He said: “Hezbollah has every incentive to promote stories like this through anonymous sources. It can claim whatever it wants, but the money does not exist. Hezbollah has suffered devastating blows and caused suffering for hundreds of thousands of innocent Lebanese. It is now trying to save face by spreading false narratives about money flowing from Iran. Iran’s oil exports are under siege, its currency is in a rapid downward spiral, and the regime is looking over its shoulder in fear.”
He added: “The United States will continue to choke off Hezbollah’s sources of funding through sanctions, while supporting the legitimate Lebanese government’s ability to rebuild the south. Hezbollah has brought nothing but misery to Lebanon and the people it claims to represent. It ignited a war on behalf of Tehran, causing billions of dollars in damage. Even if this consolation payment were real, it would not be enough.”
He concluded: “Under President Trump’s administration, Hezbollah will never be able to regain its strength or rebuild its terrorist infrastructure.”
