US President Donald Trump escalated his verbal attacks on Norway, calling it a “filthy country” and declaring that Norwegian immigrants are not welcome in the United States because he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump made the remarks on Sunday during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of next week’s midterm elections for Congress.
Trump blamed recent unrest in France on immigration and said he would welcome immigrants from several countries, excluding Norway. Because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize… I don’t want anybody from Norway, he said.
There were no indications that the Trump administration was adopting a new official policy toward immigrants from Norway.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide told the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) on Monday: Trump is fully aware that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded them of that… and that is indeed the case.
Norway’s Foreign Ministry declined to comment further.
Norway has actually become a filthy country, Trump said, using a description he had previously applied to Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
