Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived Friday in the city of Atlanta in the US state of Georgia, where he is due to represent Moscow at a meeting of G20 foreign ministers.
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced Lavrov’s arrival in the US, while many Russian media outlets, including state news agency Tass, said Russia's delegation flew for over 20 hours, taking a route that bypassed countries Moscow deemed “unfriendly.”
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had confirmed a day earlier that Lavrov would embark on a two-day visit to Atlanta to attend the G20 foreign ministers' meeting, hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
She noted that most of the organizational issues concerning the Russian delegation's participation in the meeting had been resolved.
“I should mention, however, that given that the departure is scheduled for within the next 24 hours, most issues were successfully resolved at the last minute. So the delegation has been formed, all formalities are complete, and it is ready to get to work,” Zakharova said.
