Electricité du Liban: Power Restored Only to Entities That Paid Part of their Outstanding Bills

Further to its previous statement and in implementation of the Board’s decision, the relevant teams have begun disconnecting electricity from public administrations, public institutions and municipalities that have failed to pay their outstanding bills or contact the institution to settle their accounts. The disconnections are being carried out in accordance with updated lists submitted by the administration to the relevant departments.

Following this measure, a large number of the entities concerned contacted the institution to settle their accounts and paid part of their outstanding dues, while providing written undertakings to pay the remaining amounts in monthly installments. Other entities, however, made no payments.

Accordingly, the institution clarifies that electricity supply was restored only to entities that paid part of their outstanding dues and provided written undertakings to settle the remaining amounts in monthly installments. All entities that contacted the institution also pledged to pay their upcoming electricity bills monthly and on time to prevent further arrears from accumulating.

The Board of Directors stresses that this matter will remain open and that collection efforts will continue until all outstanding dues are paid in full. Electricity will be disconnected again from any entity that fails to honor its settlement agreement or pay its current bills.

The Board also emphasizes that these measures are not directed against the state or any of its institutions. Rather, they fall squarely within its duties to collect the institution’s dues and safeguard public funds.

The Board urges the administrations and institutions concerned to fulfill their obligations, noting that paying for electricity consumption is one of the most basic obligations that should be met as a matter of course.

The Board expresses its surprise at the uproar surrounding the implementation of a measure that falls among its most basic responsibilities and duties.

It also thanks the administrations and institutions that cooperated, as well as all media outlets that covered this step. The Board reaffirms its commitment to ensuring the continuity and financial sustainability of Electricité du Liban, increasing electricity production and extending supply hours.
