From Disrupting Signals to Destroying Drones... An Unconventional Weapon on the Battlefield

Russia is stepping up its use of electromagnetic systems to disrupt the signals of Ukrainian drones heading towards Moscow.

These systems work by cutting off communications between drones and their operators and interfering with their navigation systems, forcing them off course. Moscow is also developing more advanced electromagnetic weapons in an effort to reduce drone attacks and rely less on conventional missiles to shoot them down.

The process begins with detecting incoming Ukrainian drones. Radar and sensor systems track their locations and flight paths before electromagnetic systems are activated. These systems emit signals that interfere with communications between the drones and their operators or block their ability to receive satellite navigation signals.

The technology can also go a step further by sending false navigation signals that confuse a drone's positioning system and may cause it to stray from its intended route.

As part of its efforts to expand these capabilities, Moscow has unveiled an "anti-drone dome" project, which combines detection, signal disruption and interception in a multilayered defence system.

However, Russia is looking to go beyond disrupting signals and directly damage the drones' electronic components. It is also developing weapons that use powerful electromagnetic pulses to target sensitive circuits inside drones, potentially disabling them or permanently damaging their components.

Still, these systems cannot guarantee that every drone will be brought down. Their effectiveness depends on the capabilities of the weapons used and the protective and navigation systems installed on the drones
