World Health Organization’s staff residence in the southern city of Deir al-Balah was attacked three time today, Secretary General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said.

“Israeli military entered the premises, forcing women and children to evacuate on foot toward Al-Mawasi amid active conflict. Male staff and family members were handcuffed, stripped, interrogated on the spot and screened at gunpoint,” Ghebreyesus said on X.

Two WHO staff and two families members were detained. Three were later released, while one staff remains in detention, he said.

His comments come after the Israeli army issued this week a forced evacuation order for areas of Deir al-Balah – the main hub for humanitarian efforts in the Strip – and launched a ground operation there, a first since the start of the war. The order affected several WHO premises “pushing the health system further towards collapse, Ghebreyesus said.

WHO’s main warehouse located in Deir al-Balah, which is within the evacuation zone, was also damaged yesterday when an attack caused explosions and a fire inside, he added.
