After North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing, a team of North Korean staff carefully scanned the area left by the leader as part of strict security protocols to protect him.
Even as Kim and Putin displayed friendly gestures, footage revealed the extraordinary measures North Korea took to erase any traces related to Kim or his health, Reuters reported.
Kremlin correspondent Alexander Yunashev shared a video on Telegram showing North Korean intelligence using for the first time a "purging" approach to remove all evidence of their leader.
Two North Korean staff members wiped the chair and armrests and cleaned the coffee table next to Kim’s seat, removing the cup from which Kim Jong Un drank.
The reporter stated, “After the discussions, the two aides carefully removed all traces of Kim’s presence.”
After the talks in the hall, Kim and Putin left for tea and warmly bid each other farewell.
Russian journalist Sergey Goncharov told Shout News that members of Kim’s delegation removed all signs of his presence during the talks in China to prevent North Korea’s adversaries from obtaining any of his DNA, according to Russia Today.
As in previous foreign trips, Kim reportedly took his personal toilet on board a special green train to Beijing to conceal health evidence, according to Nikkei, citing South Korean and Japanese intelligence agencies.
Michael Madden, a North Korea expert at the U.S.-based Stimson Center, said such measures have been standard protocol since the era of Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un’s father.
He added, “The personal toilet, collecting waste and cigarette butts in garbage bags so that a foreign intelligence agency, even a friendly one, cannot obtain a sample for testing,” Reuters reported.
In 2019, after Kim’s summit with US President Donald Trump in Hanoi, Kim’s guards were seen sealing off the floor containing his hotel room for hours to clean it, removing items including the mattress.
