US Envoy Tom Barrack said that Syria and Israel are moving closer to reaching a de-escalation agreement, under which Israel would halt its attacks while Syria agrees not to move any heavy equipment or military vehicles near the Israeli border.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Barrack said the deal would serve as the first step toward a broader security agreement the two countries are negotiating.
Syria and Israel have been holding talks aimed at securing an arrangement that Damascus hopes will put an end to Israeli airstrikes and ensure the withdrawal of Israeli forces that have pushed into southern Syria.
Barrack added that US President Donald Trump has been working to broker an agreement between the two sides that could be announced this week, but progress so far has been limited. He noted that the Jewish New Year holiday has also slowed the process.
“I believe everyone is approaching this in good faith,” Barrack said.
