Earthquake strikes western Venezuela
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Venezuela, felt by residents of the capital, Caracas, but it did not cause significant damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was at a depth of 7.8 kilometers, 24 kilometers from Mini Grande, an oil town in Zulia state near Lake Maracaibo, which has a low population density.

However, the Venezuelan seismic research institute, FUNVISIS, estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.4.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello stated that the earthquake “was magnitude 5.4 but did not cause major structural damage. The lack of severe structural damage from a 5.4-magnitude earthquake, which is quite strong, is due to the quality of construction in Venezuela.
